The Aussie ‘push’

November 14, 2006 By videv Leave a Comment

Much TV and news coverage was given to the Aussie ‘push’ given to BCCI president Sharad Pawar in the Champions Trophy.
The Poynting Finger and ‘Hiya buddy’ were the other ‘items’ to round up the whole affair.
Given that it was not one single thing but 3 and counting, it is difficult to think
if it was not planned in some sense. If only one of these 3 things had happened, it
‘might’ be dismissed as a one off absurdity. Otherwise, such behaviour might be expected
from people drunk out of their senses.

Though Indian media and other commentators had their own take on this, nobody seemed to
see any racial angle to it. But as Sunil Gavaskar rightly pointed out, would Aussies address
their own PM as ‘hiya buddy’? Or to take the argument further, would they push him
away to make way for their team photo?

What’s more — the initial comment from Ponting was what could be termed a ‘left handed’ offer
of apology. Because it started off making the right noises, but in the end said he will
ask Pawar on how he felt rather than go by Indian media reports.

The Aussies will do what they will do. But if you don’t like their behaviour, send an SMS
with ‘Aussies suck’ to 8585. (That was a joke). But seriously, why not stop buying the
products Aussie team members endorse. What? they don’t endorse many products in India? So
probably that’s why they care so little. If winning is everything, then job was well done.
