The reality of reality TV

Ok. I do not profess to be an expert on media and certainly not about TV. In fact I am developing an aversion to TV, since half the time I can not get the TV channels I like due to some cable problem or other. And the no of commercials or 'breaks' do the rest in putting you off.

But while sitting in front of TV tonight, while KBC dwitieeeiiiiyaa was going on, it set me thinking why reality shows are becoming popular everywhere. It is not an only US or Indian phenomenon. I read some recent reality show in China has had 400 m viewers and has beome most successful show in a country where TV programming was state regulated until recently.

It is probably because in the world today, there are not too many problems and issues which move the imagination of people. And reality TV is filling the void, by letting people experience something of their own lives themselves in a world which is otherwise becoming predictable, rushed, and shall we say the G word - globalized !
